Wade Linear drainage channels from Alumasc Water Management Solutions (AWMS) have been specified at the new Woolwich Waves Leisure Centre in South-East London.
The specification reflects the importance of reliable water management in major civic buildings, with the Wade system providing proven, efficient drainage across key wet areas, and a refined visual finish suited to this high-profile leisure destination.
Woolwich Waves is a key element in the ongoing transformation of Woolwich, contributing to a broader programme aimed at revitalising the local area. Developed as a contemporary public wellness hub, the building has replaced an earlier facility and has been positioned as a focal point for the community.
Designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects, and delivered by main contractor Morgan Sindall, the three-storey building boasts 12,800m² of internal space, bringing together water activities, sports and family-focused amenities within a single integrated complex. A principal swimming hall incorporates a 25-metre, eight-lane pool, alongside separate flumes and slides, and a supported swimming area. The facility also includes a health club with a two-storey gym and exercise studios.

Project Considerations
Drainage plays a crucial role in the efficient ongoing operation of a busy leisure complex. The project required a robust solution capable of managing significant volumes of water generated daily, while maintaining a high standard of safety and hygiene. Additionally, the aesthetics of the system needed to contribute positively to the overall interior design.
To meet these exacting requirements, Wade Linear drainage channels from Alumasc were installed by Halsion Building Services Engineers, across all changing rooms, public washrooms and sauna areas. The Linear drainage range presents Wade’s most versatile and visually refined channel and grate system for both new build and refurbishment projects.

At Woolwich Waves, the Wade Linear system was supplied in Grade 304 stainless steel, which is ideal for hygienic or wet environments, offering excellent corrosion resistance and a clean aesthetic to help distinguish between wet and dry zones. Grade 316 stainless steel is available for applications where superior corrosion resistance is required. Available in a variety of profiles with built-in falls, stainless steel systems provide reliable performance with minimal maintenance.
Essential collaboration
The Wade technical team worked closely with both Morgan Sindall and installers Halsion for the duration of the Woolwich Waves project. The challenging installation called for a series of detailed meetings to ensure the integrity of the new system; and open communication between all teams helped facilitate a free-flowing work schedule for all trades on site.
This collaborative approach enabled the drainage solution to integrate seamlessly within the wider project, whilst guaranteeing the required performance and visual standards.
Comprehensive Product Options
In addition to the stainless steel option used at Woolwich Waves, Wade Linear gratings are also available in alternative metals to suit a range of applications.
Nickel bronze gratings offer a practical yet decorative solution for interior and exterior applications. Their warm metallic finish complements premium floor finishes including terrazzo, marble, York stone and sheet flooring, while performing well in areas subject to high pedestrian traffic.
Cast iron gratings remain the traditional choice for heavy-use service zones and plant areas, delivering exceptional strength and long-term durability. Cast iron is also widely used in refurbishment projects and heritage environments, where its robust construction and traditional appearance integrate well with older architectural features.

Wade Linear offers a range of channel configurations for different environments and volumes of water. Load classes include A15, B125, C250 and D400 depending on channel type. The channels are low maintenance and are easily cleaned by directing a jet of water along the channel towards the outlet.
The system meets the requirements of BS EN 1433 and is engineered for efficient flow management and long-term reliability. Faceted and curved channel systems offer further flexibility for designers seeking bespoke architectural solutions. Wade Linear also includes a range of custom channels designed to accommodate non-standard applications.
Wade Building Drainage sits under the AWMS umbrella together with Alumasc Rainwater Gutters & Downpipes; Skyline Architectural Aluminium; Gatic Civil Drainage & Access Covers; and Harmer Building Drainage. All five brands are well known for innovation, quality and longevity.
