Howard Chapman, Buildingtalk Editor, reviews Explore Offsite in the Housing Sector at the NEC, 23-24 March and highlights why it offers significant insights into solutions to the UK housing crisis.
Despite recent headlines about the rise in number of new homes built (up 23% in the last quarter of 2015) the housing charity Shelter said the increase was “not good enough”, with only half the number of homes needed were being built.
In the whole of last year, 143,560 new homes were started, which was up by 6% on 2014. But this was still 22% below 2007’s peak. With a growing population it is woefully short of what the country needs.
Housing Minister Brandon Lewis agrees and has detailed the “most ambitious housing vision for more than a generation, doubling the housing budget so we can meet our ambition of delivering a million new homes.”
