£25M allocated to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme – Mitsubishi Electric reaction

  • 30 Jan 2025

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced that an additional £25M of funding will be allocated to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. This article features comment from James Chaplen, Head of Production at heat pump manufacturer, Mitsubishi Electric

This announcement comes alongside promising new data just announced around the uptake of heat pumps in the UK – a 63% increase to almost 100,000 installs in 2024.

With such an increase in consumer demand, manufacturers like Mitsubishi Electric also need certainty around the roll out of the Future Homes Standard, which will be vital to outline investment into manufacturing. This is the perfect moment to encourage UK heat pump manufacturing, but further clarity form the government is needed.

James Chaplen comments: “Mitsubishi Electric welcomes the UK government’s announcement to increase the Boiler Upgrade Scheme budget by an additional £25 million for the financial year 2024/2025, bringing the total scheme funding to £205 million.

“This increase, along with Ofgem’s approval to over-allocate vouchers up to £280 million, will provide much-needed certainty and support to homeowners looking to transition to low-carbon heating solutions.

“The additional funding will help drive further adoption of heat pump technology, making sustainable heating more accessible across the UK.

“There is a massive opportunity in the UK to unlock investment in heat pump manufacturing and to strengthen decarbonisation. This announcement contributes to that. However, industry is anxiously waiting for the government to provide clarity on the Future Homes Standard. This would have an immense impact, providing confidence as the country gears to meeting the government’s housing target and net zero target.”
