Clay pavers from Wienerberger’s landscape collection were used to create beautiful communal courtyard spaces for Lendlease’s award-winning South Gardens housing development in Elephant & Castle, London.
Part of the 3,000 home Elephant Park Masterplan project, South Gardens features low-rise townhouses, mansion blocks and a 16-storey tower block located around three horticulturally rich courtyards.
Designed by landscape architects Churchman Landscape Associates, these community-oriented outdoor spaces feature clay paving in a harmonious blend of hard and soft landscaping.
Dutch style clay pavers in red, buff and dark grey tones were expertly mixed in different variations throughout the courtyards to create meandering pathways that complement surrounding habitats and design features.
Supplied by Hardscape and installed by landscape contractors Gavin Jones, Wienerberger’s Rosa Waterstruck, Siena and Nero pavers were laid in an eye-catching herringbone pattern to inspire movement throughout the space and replicate the look of a traditional cottage garden.
Joanne Roberts, Wienerberger’s Category Marketing Manager for Landscape, commented: “The South Gardens project truly is an urban sanctuary and demonstrates how clay pavers can be used effectively in the design of an engaging outdoor space.
“Recreating a woodland edge, this development is a great example of how innovative landscaping can enhance the wellbeing of modern families in inner city housing.”
The high quality of landscape design showcased on the South Gardens project has been recognised with numerous prestigious honours, including the Small-Scale Development award and the President’s Award at the 2018 Landscape Institute Awards.
Wienerberger’s landscaping collection offers a wide selection of clay pavers in a spectrum of shades, sizes and textures, suitable for both domestic and commercial installations.
The colourfast quality of natural clay ensures that these durable pavers maintain their depth of colour and aesthetic appeal for a lifetime.
Wienerberger’s Mix & Texture Generator online tool allows landscape designers to create their own custom clay paving scheme using up to five paver choices and a variety of laying patterns.
Each bespoke creation can be downloaded as an image and a Revit BIM Object to integrate into project specifications.
You can experiment with clay pavers using the Mix & Texture Generator, which can be found here
