Providing a safe and comfortable learning environment is key in education. Read on to learn about legislation relating to radiator surface temperature and how this could affect you.
The Education (School Premises) Regulations states that radiators and exposed pipes which are located where pupils might touch them must not become hotter than 43°c.
Where can this legislation be found?
• Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Section 3
• Management of Health and Safety and Work Regulations 1999
• Provision of Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
According to the Leisure Accident Surveillance System, in 2010, 1,970 people were injured in a public building by either a radiator or a section of hot pipework over a twelve-month period. What an alarming figure! Of these accidents, 1,399 occurred in a place of education. Therefore, it is absolutely crucial that safe choices are made regarding radiators.
Low surface temperature radiators (or LSTs for short) are radiators that stay within a certain temperature boundary to meet recommended safety standards. Click here to learn more about LST radiators.
Whilst ensuring the temperatures do not exceed 43°c, Contour’s LST radiators are also coated with BioCote® anti-microbial technologies. This provides additional safety regarding the growth of potentially harmful bacteria. Click here to learn more about BioCote® anti-bacterial technologies.
If you’re not looking for a whole new heating system upgrade, Contour also offers low surface temperature radiator covers which are retrofitted over the existing panel radiators. To learn more about low surface temperature radiator covers, how they are installed and how they are made, click here.
