Saint-Gobain Weber’s complete guide to render maintenance: Part one – how to clean render

  • 16 Mar 2020

Whilst monocouche render is low maintenance, that does not mean it requires no maintenance; much like bricks or any other building facade, render is susceptible to the effects of the elements over time and requires maintenance now and then. Saint-Gobain Weber has created a series of guides to give advice on how to cleanrepair and protect render, to keep it looking fresh for longer, with Part One looking at cleaning.

Render offers a clean, modern, and attractive finish for homes which will last for over two decades if properly maintained.

Although render is low maintenance, it may need to be washed down from time to time. Saint-Gobain Weber has created this useful guide on how to clean coloured render and keep it looking fresh for years to come, also covering how to remove green algae, which is a common concern for those with rendered walls.

Watch out for vegetation

Any organic growth on the surface will make a beautifully rendered home look grubby.

Gently remove any ivy, moss or other greenery using a brush, and then treat the entire wall with a render cleaner such as weber CL150

This step-by-step video shows how render is cleaned.

Even if there is no sign of growth on the building, it can be a wise idea to give it an occasional wash with weber CL150, which will kill a wide range of bacterial, fungal and algal species, including green algae.

This will not only keep the render looking fresh, but will slow down algae build-up before it becomes noticeable.

Wash it down

To remove stains or general grubbiness from render, give the building a good wash using a pressure washer and a mild detergent.

Take care to adjust the pressure washer to a fan action rather than a jet action, as the render could get damaged. There is no precise rule as to how often render should be washed — once a year or as often as necessary to keep it looking great.

NOTE: Pressure washing is unsuitable for dry dash finishes.
