A complete rebuild and extension of a late Victorian terraced house in Brockley, South East London, presented challenges at every turn; it suffered from having poor-quality extensions and structural problems, but was redesigned by Conibere Philips architects, with the specification of Alumasc Rainwater Flushjoint downpipes and hoppers.
This ensured elegant and efficient water management, as well as security against water ingress into the new masterpiece of a home.
Robin Philips, Partner Director at Conibere Philips, commented: “It’s extremely unusual for a mid-terrace to be demolished and rebuilt in this way, but it was decided as the most economic and sensible course of action to take in this case.
“This also allowed us to adapt the property on rebuilding to look much more contemporary and elegant.
“We chose to specify Rainwater Flushjoint downpipes and hoppers from Alumasc to maximise on their sleek and minimal design that would further contribute to the contemporary look of the building.
“The joints in the RWP sections are very elegant. The whole effect is much less cluttered than most other RWP products. A simple, modern elevation would have been ruined with more traditional RWP products.”
Ben Green, at Alumasc, explained: “As a contemporary range of extruded aluminium downpipes, the Flushjoint system is based on concealed spigots which give a smooth, clean appearance that complements modern building design.
“This is emphasised by mounting the pipes on brackets enabling them to stand clear of the structure.”
Used to achieve completely smooth external appearance, they are compatible with all Alumasc aluminium gutters, when gutter girth is sufficient to accommodate the cross sectioned area of the pipe. Outlets are made to order according to gutter choice and individual project requirements.
Flushjoint is available in circular, square and rectangular profiles to better suit each project and has a life expectancy of 40 years in rural/suburban areas and 25 years in marine areas. It is also 100% recyclable when it reaches the end of its life.
Flushjoint can be supplied in 26 standard factory applied colours, BS or RAL colours to special order or even a plain mill finish for on-site painting. A BBA approved polyester powder coating process is used to finish every aluminium painted product.
This proposal radically challenged what can be achieved with a typical house extension and takes it to another level by rebuilding and upgrading the whole house with the addition of modern products.
