The advantages of monocouche render with Saint-Gobain Weber

  • 24 Jun 2020

Ideal for rendering brickwork or blockwork, Saint-Gobain Weber explains the long list of advantages to using monocouche renders in this article.

In the past, once a homeowner decided to render their property, the builder tasked with doing the job would probably have used a sand and cement-based render.

Made by mixing four-parts sand with one-part cement, it is a traditional method but one that offers no flexibility. This means over time, as the property expands and shrinks with the changing weather, the sand and cement render is highly likely to fall victim to cracking.

Because of this, building materials and the technology behind them had to evolve. Identifying the need to offer an alternative to the low performance of traditional sand and cement is something Weber has done – courtesy of its innovative range of monocouche renders.

Perfect for the rejuvenation of buildings or providing a high-quality finish to new build projects, these easy-to-apply products, which can last upwards of a quarter of century if properly maintained, offer a clean and attractive finish for the property.

What is a monocouche render?

The word ‘monocouche’ is derived from French: mono (single) couche (coat), hence the term ‘one coat render’.

Weber monocouche creates a coloured render finish suitable for most types of brick or blockwork. Consisting of just a single coat, applied in two passes, this unique cement render saves time and resources compared to a traditional two coat system.

What are some of its key advantages?

Offering a low-maintenance and durable finish, monocouche render allows for fast application, depending on temperature and weather conditions – this means shorter programme periods and reduced scaffolding and site costs.

The applicator can trowel or pump it and finish scraping on the same day, therefore allowing access to other trades more quickly.

Aside from being able to produce a range of finishes — including scraped, roughcast or dry dashed — monocouche renders are also suitable for creating ashlar and quoin features.

Coloured in nature, no further decoration or topcoat render is required, and if scratched or damaged, it will remain the same colour throughout.
