Staggering Kestrel charity challenge raises over £1k for Macmillan

  • 27 Sep 2021

What could be nicer than two summer days strolling on the Isle of Wight? That’s the enticing fundraiser two Kestrel managers took on to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Care.

However, the challenge was real, with 66.5 miles to hike in just two days. Furthermore, being a British summer, the weather was not what Michelle and Danny were hoping for, with the heavens opening!

Site Planning Manager Michelle Booker and Injection Moulding Manager Danny Rumsey were taking on the Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge.

Michelle comments: “The event was part of the Ultra Challenge events where we walked 107 km, it should have been 106 km but due to heavy rain we had an extra 1km added on for a de-tour! We completed the challenge in two days and our total walking time was 25 hours.”

Personal challenge

The challenge was very personal for Michelle and Danny, who had between them lost an aunt and colleague in quick succession to cancer. Michelle’s father also had a cancer diagnosis, and thankfully his case treatment has been successful.

Michelle adds: “Seeing people we care about go through cancer and knowing the tremendous support Macmillan gave them made us wanted to do something to say thank you in whatever way we could.”

The pair completed a coastal circuit that took in the southern cliffs, iconic Needles, Cowes and on to historic Ventnor.

£1125 was raised for the charity which offers vital support to those with cancer and their families.

The Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge is one of 14 events across the country – from the Lake District to the Isle of Wight – that over the years have raised staggering £33m for Macmillan.

While the pair have currently hung up their hiking boots, their Just Giving page is still active.
