Vandersanden to showcase latest innovation at Architect@Work 2022

Brick manufacturer Vandersanden will showcase their latest innovation, Coated Bricks, on Stand 61 at the ARCHITECT@WORK event in London.

Coated Bricks have been designed to help avoid brick stains and efflorescence and help maintain sustainably attractive facades. On 13th & 14th April 2022, the Old Truman Brewery in London is set to open its doors for the 10th edition of ARCHITECT@WORK.

This two-day event allows architects to gain a deeper understanding of how particular new products can add value, within both large and small scale projects.

Vandersanden is one of many leading European architectural suppliers who will be showing their innovative new products to visitors across the 2 days of the event.

Coated Bricks

For long-lasting and sustainably attractive facades, Vandersanden has created Coated Bricks to protect the building aesthetic. These are the only bricks on the market that are protected against white spots and residue with a 25-year warranty against gypsum efflorescence. Over time, bricks can discolour and lose their lustre because of the impact of wet weather, air pollution or efflorescences.

The result can have a detrimental effect on a building’s visual aesthetic, compromising the architect’s design vision and reducing the value of the property for the owner.

Vandersanden is the first company to develop a viable, large scale coating solution to provide superior protection against gypsum efflorescence as well as secondary protection against the effects of pollution. Vandersanden has invested 30 million euros to install coating facilities at three of its European manufacturing facilities.

This innovative and environmentally sustainable process has now been fully rolled out across the entire Vandersanden hand-formed brick range available to UK specifiers.

Composition of the product

Vandersanden worked with Belgian University, KU Leuven, to develop the solution which treats bricks with a special sustainable coating after the firing process.

The process penetrates to a depth from 5mm to 15mm whilst retaining the original colour of the brick. The liquids contain no harmful substances or chemicals that can damage the brick or the environment and is automatically applied at Vandersanden’s manufacturing facilities in Belgium and The Netherlands.

Applying the coating during the production process, eliminates the need to coat the bricks with an applicator once they have been installed, which is a highly specialised and expensive process. It also reduces the often laborious and costly task of prepping the façade for a coating and the regular maintenance required.

Vandersanden coated bricks can also be delivered at the same cost as non-coated bricks, delivering real tangible benefits to the architect.

The coating liquids are environmentally-friendly and sustainable – they contain no harmful substances or chemicals that can damage the brick or the environment. In addition, Vandersanden offers a 25-year warranty against gypsum efflorescence.
