Q&A: 12 years of Carlton Jones’ directorship of the MCRMA

  • 12 May 2023

This month marks the 12th year of Carlton Jones’ directorship of the Metal Cladding And Roofing Manufacturers Association (MCRMA). We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Carlton and hear about his extensive work history in the industry, as well as his vision for the future of the MCRMA. With over five decades of experience, it was no surprise to those familiar with him when he was appointed to his current role.

What was your first job in the construction industry?

My very first job was with British Steel in R&D focusing on structural testing of a range of construction products i.e. cladding, lintels, and modular buildings. I naturally progressed in the role and expanded into environmental testing and the designing of test rigs to accommodate the wide range of tests needed. I worked for British Steel (later known as Tata) for just over 40 years.

What made you want to take over the Director role of the MCRMA?

I was supposed to be taking an early retirement from Tata and the current director (and founder) of the MCRMA was retiring due to ill health. When I was offered the opportunity, it was a no-brainer for me. I felt really privileged to be asked. I have always been in the industry, and I have naturally gained lots of connections, so it seemed like the perfect fit.

The role was an expansion of my earlier involvement with the MCRMA as a member and my experience involved in product and market development with a lot of the companies who were members of the MCRMA. I have not looked back since and this month marks 12 years of being in this role.

How has the MCRMA changed since you started in 2011?

The association has grown and encompassed Independent Inspectors, System Installers, and Industry Support. The association has always had a strong technical focus, but it was recognised that there was a need to actively promote or commercialise the work to a wide specification sector. All our members bring so much value to the association and we are looking forward to the future.

What would you say to anyone thinking about becoming a member of the MCRMA?

The construction industry is becoming more integrated with a system approach and guarantees and warranties based on 3rd party assessment and the use of changing standards. The MCRMA offers members an opportunity to work together and with our involvement in national and international standards and connections at all levels the MCRMA can keep members abreast of ever-changing requirements.

The Building Safety Act, competency, CE/UKCA marking, Zero carbon and sustainability are just some of the items the industry needs to be aware of. MCRMA can ensure that members are made abreast of the detail.
