UK building materials producer Glidevale Protect has promoted Jim Smith to head of technical, to continue to drive its programme of product innovation in the development of energy efficient construction and roofing products.
Jim joined the business in 2021 and, prior to his recent promotion, worked as product technical performance manager in the Glidevale Protect technical team. In his new role, he leads the team which comprises three technical support colleagues plus a development technician in the lab, as part of quality control, product testing and development.
Glidevale Protect’s technical team looks after every aspect of its product range from material supply, testing and certification. It plays a key role in new product development, including the launch of the company’s most recent product – Protect FrameSafe FR – a new Class A2-s1, d0 fire retardant external wall breather membrane offering fire protection across low, medium and high rise buildings. Jim took the lead on this project, sourcing raw materials, collating samples, agreeing specifications and coordinating both in-house and third-party product testing.
Another aspect of the team’s role is providing customers with technical support and installation advice across Glidevale Protect’s full product range including roofing and construction membranes, ventilation and cavity trays.
As part of this, the team regularly produces U-value calculations, condensation risk calculations and site take offs as well as offering advice on standards and regulations – ensuring customers specify the most appropriate products for each project. The busy team also deals with all customers queries, arranges site visits and delivers CPDs and toolbox talks.
Jim comments: “I am delighted to have taken on this new role and to continue to work with the technical team here at Glidevale Protect to support our customers with trusted and reliable technical advice.
“It’s vitally important that our products always perform to the highest standards and our robust in-house and third-party testing is testament to our commitment to developing innovative products that comply with all relevant regulations and standards.
“The development of FrameSafe FR was a complex process so it’s great to see all our hard work pay off now that it has successfully launched to market. We are already seeing considerable interest from specifiers.”
