Hush: Maximising acoustic insulation in floating floors

  • 24 Feb 2025

Hush Acoustics offers acoustic insulation solutions for all types of floating floors to help create quieter, more comfortable homes and acoustically superior non-domestic buildings.

The levels of soundproofing achievable in floating floors, whether they take the form of floorcovering overlays such as laminate flooring or a new subfloor, are continuously improving thanks to use of innovative materials by manufacturers like Hush Acoustics and novel application and installation methods.

As a result, architects, contractors, self-builders and DIY-ers have at their disposal a wide range of products capable of reducing sound transmission to levels that are far superior to the minimum standards within the Building Regulations. Hush Acoustics’ range of acoustic floor panels can be used over timber joisted floors and concrete/masonry floors to reduce both impact and airborne sound transmission.

In many acoustic floor applications, Hush Panel 28 provides the optimum solution because of the density that the high quality P5 moisture-resistant TG4 chipboard offers in combination with a Hush Felt resilient layer – all within a 28mm thickness.

This composition enables Hush Panel 28 to provide sound reduction levels of 54 dB (L’nT,w) for impact sound, 60 dB for airborne sound (DnT,w) and 54 dB for airborne sound adjusted for low frequencies (DnT,w + Ctr) within a timber joisted floor construction. This level of performance is possible in separating floors where suitable ceiling detailing applies and any flanking issues have been addressed.

Hush Cem Panel 28

Where a higher level of acoustic insulation is required, Hush Acoustics offers several higher mass floating floor panels with its cement particle chipboard products, such Hush Cem Panel 28. These are formed of a denser material than standard chipboard for enhanced airborne sound reduction and feature both an acoustic felt and a rubber barrier mat.

And for floors where there is limited scope for an increase in the floor height, Hush Acoustics provides thinner floor panel options. These include variants of Hush Panel in 17mm and 23mm thicknesses.

Hush

Hush FFR Resilient Underlay, a rubber based high mass underlay which is suitable for laminate and engineered wood planks, along with highly effective underlay specifically designed for LVT and vinyl flooring.

In projects where the subfloor is not being replaced, such as when laying a new engineered timber floor or laminate floor in a renovation or home improvement project, the acoustic performance of a simple floating floor can also be improved using one of Hush Acoustics’ specially formulated underlay products.

These include Hush FFR Resilient Underlay, which is suitable for laminate or engineered wood planks, along with highly effective underlay specifically designed for LVT and vinyl flooring.

The composition of these products means that they are much more effective than standard underlay at reducing impact sound transmission – and they also provide thermal insulation. They are also thin, with the Hush Underlay for LVT being just 1.6mm thick, for example, which means the floor build-up height can still be kept to a minimum whilst improving acoustic performance.
