The MCRMA’s three day introductory training course designed for new entrants to the metal facades and roofing sector has been accredited by the CPD Certification Service.
The Technical Appreciation Course offers individuals at the very start of their careers, as well as office-based staff already working in the supply chain who would not ordinarily get involved with working on-site, the opportunity to develop a foundation in metal cladding and roofing design and installation.
It covers a mix of the theoretical and practical, including ‘building physics’ topics relating to the metal building envelope, such as thermal performance, acoustics and fire performance, plus issues around health and safety.
Hands-on training
One of the most valued aspects of the MCRMA Technical Appreciation Course is that it enables participants to gain hands-on experience using components and the interfaces between roofing, cladding and the structure, developing practical installation skills in the process.
The training is delivered by two course instructors – an NVQ assessor and a highly experienced consultant – and on completion of the course, participants receive CPD certification that confirms basic (initial) competency.

Securing CPD Certification Service accreditation marks an important stage in the development of this training course. This renowned quality mark verifies that the training has been independently assessed by a qualified auditor and that it meets the highest professional standards, with the content effectively structured and relevant to its aims.
Carlton Jones, Director of the MCRMA, says: “Our Technical Appreciation Course has long been valued as a good way for new entrants to the cladding and roofing industry to familiarise themselves with the basics of what’s involved in both the design and installation stages.
“Gaining CPD accreditation gives the course additional assurance to potential attendees that its content is technically correct and authoritative, and that the format is appropriate for the learning outcomes.
“We believe being accredited as a CPD further strengthens the appeal of the course, which has been running for 20 years, and I would like to thank Denise Cherry, Chair of the National Roof Training Group, for her expertise and support in securing approval.
“CPD accreditation also aligns with industry best practice more broadly to ensure independent review and assessment is undertaken wherever possible to validate the information, knowledge and skills we are providing to the next generation, wherever they are in the metal building envelope supply chain.”
The MCRMA Technical Appreciation Course runs between four and six times a year, held at SPV Group’s industry-leading training centre in Aldridge, Walsall, with each programme accommodating a maximum of eight people on each course, working in two groups in pairs on separate assembly rigs. It is open to anyone in the industry, although members of the MCRMA benefit from a discount on the standard course fee.
Day one covers a wide variety of topics including the building process, the steel structure, cladding systems and components, and building performance, with the second day moving on to the practical aspects of working on site. This includes working at height, risk assessments, the drawing of rigs, and setting up of tools, before introducing roofing and cladding installation. Day three enables participants to continue their practical installation training from the previous afternoon.
