BM TRADA to stream fire door test for Fire Door Safety Week

BM TRADA will be supporting Fire Door Safety Week by streaming footage from a fire door test into Fire Door Sure?, an event being held at the Building Centre in London on 17^th September.

The event will mark the launch of BWF-CENRTIFIRE’s new Best Practice Guide to selecting, installing, using and maintaining fire doors.

The 30-minute fire resistance test – scheduled for 11am – offers viewers an opportunity to see for themselves the crucial role played by fire doors in saving lives and property.

Filmed in BM TRADA’s testing laboratories in High Wycombe, the test demonstrates two identical doors subjected to a prolonged period of fire. One of the doors will have been correctly specified and fitted, whilst the other will demonstrate many of the common mistakes made.

The test is designed to show the difference in fire resistance between the two doors, focusing on the importance of appropriate specification and installation and clearly demonstrating why a door must be adequately maintained throughout its life.

The display will also feature full size models of a charred fire door and a glazing system which have both undergone a similar fire test- demonstrating the effectiveness of correctly specified and installed fire doors. 

The BM TRADA team will also be answering queries and offering advice to building owners, facilities managers, specifiers and installers.

Fire Door Safety Week

Fire Door Safety Week is an event organised by the British Woodworking Federation and supported by BM TRADA, which is scheduled to take place between 14^th – 20^th September.

It aims to draw attention to the critical role played by fire doors in saving lives and property and to educate building owners and users on how to correctly install and maintain them.

Hannah Mansell, spokesperson for Fire Door Safety Week, said: “The rates of fire deaths and casualties are reducing, but there are still an average of 25 fatalities or injuries from building fires every day.  Fire doors are a crucial first line of defence in many of these fires, and yet they remain a significant area of neglect.

Fire doors are often the first thing to be downgraded in a specification, mismanaged throughout their service life, propped open, damaged and badly maintained.”

The live fire door test in an integral part of BM TRADA’s Fire Doors Explained CPD seminar, which offers an introduction fire door regulations, construction, testing, installation and maintenance.
