Redland's Rosemary Clay Craftsman tile featured on The Plain House

Heritage-style roof tiles selected for eco-efficient luxury home

Redland’s Rosemary Clay Craftsman roof tile has been specified for the construction of an eco-efficient luxury home in the Surrey hills.

House builder James Taylor, owner of PAARL Energy, collaborated with architects Goater Jones on a sustainable building that would be able to produce a large portion of its own energy requirements.

The three-storey house is situated on a slope facing the Surrey Downs. The interior features six bedrooms, five bathrooms and includes a home cinema.

To help enhance the energy efficiency of the property a strong and durable roof was of utmost importance.

The Rosemary Clay Craftsman tile was used for both the roof and the vertical tiling. The tile features a variable hanging length and random textured surfaces to create a handmade weathered look, whilst retaining the qualities and benefits of a new, machine-made tile.

It was selected in an Albury finish to give a traditional warm dark reddish aesthetic with natural textures which create an aged heritage look.

Speaking about the project, James Taylor said: “Having worked on countless roofs in the past, I knew that the Craftsman was the best tile for the job as they are renowned for their quality and strength.

We always order extra tiles to make up for any breakages and in this case we had loads left over because they simply didn’t break. I liked the look of them so much, I even used them on the walls as an added decorative feature.”

Affectionately named The Plain House, the property didn’t even have a chance to hit the market before it was purchased for the asking price of £2.5m
