Why Millennials demand change in workplace design

Workplace design must change for Millennials

Millennials, the generation born after 1980, are now getting into their economic stride and about to move into their prime spending years.

According to Goldman Sachs research, Millennials are one of the largest generations in history and are poised to reshape the economy. Their unique experiences will change the ways we buy and sell, forcing companies to examine how they do business for decades to come.

In 10 years time they will be 75% of the workforce. but they are not just an age group.

What will the office of the future look like?

What is really transforming the workplace is the Millennial mindset that is expressed through four key dimensions each with profound implications to design:

  • Connectivity
  • Collaboration
  • Flexibility
  • Autonomy

Interior design specialist GARY WHEELER, founder partner at WHEELERKANIK, will be interviewed along with GRANT K€NIK by Buildingtalk during Clerkenwell Design Week on Thursday 21st May at around 1pm, live and interactive via Periscope.

The inteview wiil be at The Vault showroom, 8 St Johns Lane, London, EC1M 4BF Phone: 020 7566 0440

Grant will explore how workplace design can play a key part in attracting and retaining future talent by creating settings which support each of these key dimensions – and give us an insight into what the office of the future will look like.

Gary Wheeler says: Socialisation at work has become much more important. The water-cooler used to be looked at negatively. Not any more. Its where you go to find people you trust to exchange knowledge. CafŽs are the knowledge marketplace. Head-down work amounts to about half your time in the office, and it is shrinking compared to collaboration, which is growing, especially as more women enter the workplace who want sharing, validation and feedback.
