The Castles new biomass heating system is powered using wood chips from its managed woodland
The boiler was fitted by the Efficient Energy Centre to heat the main Castle, the National Trusts offices and several estate cottages.
In order to reduce the need for natural gas and oil in the heating industry, Euroheats biomass boiler uses wood chips to provide heating.
The burning of wood chips produces lower hydrocarbon and sulphur dioxide emissions than the burning of oil, making it an ecologically responsible method of producing heat.
The storage and transportation of wood chips also poses no threat to the environment.
Since the installation of its new HDG Compact 200 wood chip boiler, the Castle has started sourcing fuel from its own managed woodland to power the boiler.
Whilst reducing carbon emissions, this also saves the estate £10,000 a year.
Euroheat will find out if it has been successful at the H&V News Awards when the winner is announced at Grovesnor House Hotel, Park Lane on Thursday 16th April 2015.
After installing its HDG Compact 200 biomass wood chip boiler at Croft Castle, Euroheat was shortlisted for the Renewable Project of the Year – Private award
Croft Castle began installing greener technologies as part of the National Trusts Renewable Energy Investment Programme, which is a range of projects that have been set-up to save £4 million energy costs per annum.
The Castle now cuts 70 tonnes of carbon a year and, via the Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), it has a return on investment of £20,000 per annum.
The installation of Euroheats HDG Compact 200 wood chip boiler was the first biomass project to be undertaken as part of the National Trusts Renewable Energy Investment Programme.
Its success means that similar schemes will be carried out at other National Trust properties in the near future.
