The School’s terraced roofs have been fitted with a Blackdown green roofing system to make up 14 teaching gardens
The University’s new School of Architecture and Construction was finished and opened in December 2014.
It was designed with a series of terraced roofs to make up 14 interlinked teaching gardens.
Over 3,000 square metres of Alumasc’s green roofing system was fitted to create a living laboratory.
The green roof was specified for educational purposes; it will allow the School to carry out more research and test the sustainability of new ideas in landscaping and architecture.
For this reason, the project has achieved a BREEAM Innovation award.
The Blackdown green roofing system is manufactured using a series of components that replicate the natural growing environment for plants.
Green roofs are able to improve a building’s thermal performance, absorb CO2 and increase rainwater retention.
