Exterior cladding illuminates new London hotel

Motel One’s exterior cladding has been manufactured from DuPont Corian in a translucent white shade to give it a clean and sophisticated finish

The new Motel One building, which has been designed by Mackay & Partners, has replaced an old office establishment in the centre of London.

DuPont Corian has been used as exterior cladding for the build, which comprises almost 300 rooms and two forms: a seven storey ‘decorative cube’ and a sixteen storey glass tower.

After being specified by Ken Mackay, who had used it before, the advanced exterior cladding was installed on the contemporary building by Silverside Trading.

Eye-catching design

Manufactured from DuPont Corian in a translucent white, the cladding was fitted to provide a simple finish for the building.

However, back-lit panels have been included to illuminate the building at night, revealing patterns and hues that have been chosen to reflect Motel One’s brand.

The LED lighting system is on a colour wheel that can be dimmed and altered using a computer.

According to the building’s architects, it is the first in London to combine LED lighting with rain screen cladding.

DuPont Corian has been developed to function as an aesthetically pleasing design feature as well as a sustainable open-jointed rain screen façade.

The exterior skin is non-porous, making it easy to clean and maintain.

The material is also repairable, fire rated and resistant to UV and climatic conditions, as well as graffiti.

1,000 square metres of the lightweight cladding was specified for Motel One.

The 12mm thick sheets were supplied at 1,500mm wide to reduce the need for additional joints.
