The Dutch villa has been designed by Architect Koen Olthuis of Waterstudio, NL. In addition to the exterior façade, the building features an open-air terrace with cutaway sections, and Corian is also used within the interior kitchen installations.
One of the key reasons Corian was specified is due to its moisture and weather resistance, given the building’s waterfront location.
It was also important that the building design appeared both unique and modern, for years to come. To achieve this, the architect designed the structure with seamless, distinctive curves wrapped in Corian, offering a balance between both design and product.
He explains: Corian allowed me to realise the building exactly as I had envisaged it: with a seamless appearance and without distracting details such as eaves, window frames and roof overhangs – all things that take attention away from the real essence of the structure.
A minimalistic approach has been taken on the building, using Corian’s ‘curve appeal’ for both horizontal and vertical, and interior and exterior surfaces.
Corian is especially useful for exterior installations, as its solid and homogenous material is both stain resistant and non-porous. This eliminates the needs for additional home maintenance, such as rendering, plastering, grouting and painting.
In addition to its longevity, Corian can be restored on site if necessary as an additional environmental benefit.
Koen also applied Corian to the kitchen island with cantilevered breakfast bar. Due it its resistance to water, acidity and high temperatures, it was the ideal product for the application.
The faces of the kitchen cupboards were also formed using Corian, whilst in contrast to the smooth finish of the Corian surfaces, various panels within the design were fitted with a soft padding effect.
Exterior use of Corian, such as seen on ‘Villa New Water’ has become increasingly popular. In the UK, projects include the award-winning Lens House by Alison Brooks Architects, Mentmore Terrace apartments by USE Architects and the Motel One Minories by Mackay + Partners in London.
