The McGrath Centre is a multi-purpose building, accommodating facilities such as meeting rooms, bars and auditoriums.
Built within a courtyard, the Centre sees little natural light. The RHP architects, who worked on the site during the building’s construction, aimed to resolve this as they wanted to create a positive work environment in the college’s new auditorium.
To tackle the issue, they specified Glazing Vision’s Flushglaze modular roof light.
Glazing Vision’s design was installed above the auditorium to increase the amount of natural light entering the building.
The design featured Okalux glass, which has insulated glass elements containing capillary tubes in the cavities. These tubes are designed to break up daylight and diffuse it throughout the building. This feature ensured that the light was spread evenly throughout the space, avoiding the creation of bright and dark zones.
As the roof light had to be installed within an existing framework, the original design was modified to ensure the components integrated effectively.
A steel plate was fitted within the building’s existing steels and used as the main support for the roof light. Ten separate individually shaped sections of glass were fitted on the steel spine by Glazing Vision’s team, who aided in making the complicated installation process a success.
