The London hotel and apartments have benefited from the installation of Mitsubishi Electric’s open water heat pump system
The Kingston Heights project was designed and developed by NHP Leisure Developments to gather low grade heat energy from the Thames and move it to a hotel and 137 apartments, which are located 200 metres from the River.
The project aims to use the River’s low grade heat energy to provide heating, hot water and cooling requirements for the 142 bed hotel and conference centre, as well as the flats.
Mitsubishi Electric’s advanced open water heat pump technology has been specified to achieve this.
The system changes the River’s low grade heat to the temperature required to provide all the heating and hot water for the apartments and the hotel.
The open water heat pump system can produce 2.3 megawatts of thermal energy. As the electricity to run the system is provided by Ecotricity’s wind turbines, the installation of the system is Zero Carbon and benefits the environment.
The energy efficient system saves around 500 tonnes of carbon and has a projected Coefficients of Performance of 4-6 .
The £70 million Kingston Heights project has been awarded the ‘Commercial Project of the Year’ award at the National ACR Awards, which was held at Birmingham Town Hall on 29th January 2015.
The development has also had success at the National Heat Pump Awards 2014, the Energy & Environmental Awards 2014 and the City of London Sustainability Awards 2014. In addition, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has created an open water heat pump map inspired by the project.
