Air source heat pumps installed at environmental Hebburn Eco Centre

  • 23 Jul 2015

Designed by Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle (STAN) and opened in 1996, the Eco Centre was a pioneering venture to demonstrate renewable technologies and sustainable design.

Today, the Eco Centre remains one of Europe’s most sustainable buildings.

Eco-friendly construction

The complex was originally built using materials recycled from sustainable sources, including re-used bricks from a demolished factory, an aluminium roof re-smelted from cans, wood from farmed forests and woollen carpets.

It also contains high levels of insulation to reduce energy output, whilst keeping occupants warm.

Furthermore, electricity is generated by an on-site wind turbine and photovoltaic display, helping to ensure that the project has become an exemplar of sustainability.

Ecodan air source heat pumps

Groundwork decided to replace the ageing ground source system with an air source system, requiring a new system that could work within the existing infrastructure and cope with a variable demand for heating throughout the year.

Four Ecodan 14kW air source heat pumps working together in a cascade system was specified as a solution, as it combined the best performance available with the flexibility needed for the building’s multi-occupant use.

In addition, the Ecodan system qualifies for the non-domestic Renewable Heat Incentive, which will help supplement the buildings running costs for the next 20 years.
