Restored and newly extended to create a contemporary family home, the Grade II listed house is situated within a Conservation Area and was in a very poor condition when Chris Dyson Architects began work.
A large masonry extension was brought in to replace the existing two storey Victorian extension and complement the surrounding Georgian brick architecture, whilst all services were replaced, thermal insulation improved and rainwater harvesting introduced.
Coleridge Ashdown yellow multi brick with red tones from Ibstock was brought in to complement the house and adjacent Listed Dock wall, whilst permanent colour-washing was introduced in order to blend the colour of the new work with the brickwork of the main house.
Brickwork contractor, Beckwith Tuckpointing, used a simple mix of materials to create the aesthetic requirements outlined in the brief and all pointing on the extension is penny struck and finished flush with the brickwork.
Designers chose to reinstate and refurbish period features that had been lost over the last 50 years, carefully working to construct a building that fits in well with the surrounding Georgian architecture.
The Brick Awards is organised by the Brick Development Association and aims to showcase what brick can achieve when used across a wide range of projects.
