Rooflights produce natural light and encourage disease free cows

  • 24 Oct 2014

The rooflights provide natural light for over 800 cows and farm workers

Over 1,500m2 of the rooflights were specified for use by AJ Lowther & Son, guaranteed to offer long term performance in terms of structural durability and light transmission at the 9,850m2 steel framed building.

Natural light

The Farmlite GRP rooflights were installed across the roof area in a profile alongside the Eurosix fibre cement sheeting, providing an even distribution of natural light throughout the building for a maximum of 25 years – typically longer than most lights found in the agricultural sector.

Witcombe Farm underwent significant expansion work on the 1,100 acre site, with a new dairy unit being built to meet stringent animal welfare and environmental regulations.

With the farm building being over 40 years old and renovation not being an option, part of the design of the new build was to bring in as much diffused natural light as possible.

Each Farmlite GRP rooflight sheet comes supplied with dual action UV surface protection and specially formulated UV resistant resins, helping to substantially reduce the long term effects of weathering to ensure that a stronger and clearer light is produced.

The rooflights are proven to encourage healthier, disease resistant livestock

Disease resistant livestock

Farmlite rooflights provide a natural light that is proven to encourage healthier, more disease resistant livestock, whilst also improving conditions for farm workers by producing energy savings and reducing the consumption of electric light in the building when used alongside lighting control systems.

Brett Martin’s Farmlite rooflights contribute towards improving daylight levels and meeting strict environmental regulations at farm buildings across the UK and Ireland.
