Underground drainage system for excessive stormwater

  • 9 Jul 2015

StormCrates create underground storage tanks to manage and control stormwater where it falls. Suited for a range of commercial, residential and industrial applications, StormCrates comprise of 18kg modular units which measure at 120cm x 60cm x 42cm.

The crates can be wrapped in a geotextile that allows stored water to seep into the surrounding ground and back into the water table.

However, it is more common practise to surround StormCrates with an impermeable geomembrane to create a sealed underground tank.

The outlet from this tank is then controlled to facilitate a slow release of the stored water back into the drainage system over a long period.

Sustainable Drainage System

StormCrates are manufactured from recycled plastic, and possess a high void ration of 95% which means that the units are highly efficient at storing up to 300 litres of water in the event of heavy rains.

The SuDS can be successfully installed on any number of projects, including under parking areas, driveways and landscaped areas.

Ideal for domestic soakaways, only 250mm of cover is required above the crates for driveway applications, which results in less dig and site spoil.

When a minimum of 500mm cover is used, the high strength crate has a lorry bearing capacity of 60 tonnes.

Brett Martin also offers to inspect StormCrates if future maintenance is required.

Chris Dawson of Brett Martin Plumbing and Drainage commented: “StormCrates are simple and quick to install and due to their high strength they can be used for a range of trafficked applications.

“Flooding is an issue that won’t dry up without proper management so this proven drainage solution is a way of creating an underground attenuation or infiltration tank that avoids the costly approach of routing through an existing pipe.”
