MetsäWood’s ‘Plan B’ microsite has been designed to focus on the impact timber can have when it is used in the construction of a large scale structure.
MetsäWood has imagined how timber could be used to recreate the Colosseum
Exploring the use of the company’s structural timber on a variety of projects, the new site also features examples of MetsäWood’s recently completed UK projects.
In its first Plan B case study, MetsäWood explores how timber could have been used to deliver an architecturally sound and aesthetically pleasing Colosseum.
MetsäWood worked closely with Helin & Co. Architects’ Antti Laiho to create a visual of how the structure would look.
The Plan B microsite was devised to provide an overview of the project, detailing the entire process, from the initial concept to the design phase and the final model.
The famous Colosseum is nearly three times the size of an average sports arena.
With an emphasis on reducing construction time, the challenge was to redesign the iconic building using wood as the primary material.
The final product had to be modern, yet recognisable, and delivered using prefabricated modular elements to reduce costs and material waste.
Designed to offer load-bearing strength, MetsäWood’s Kerto laminated veneer lumber was specified for the new Colosseum’s beams and columns.
