The WorldSkills competition occurs every two years; it is the largest vocational education and skills excellent event in the world.

Competitors are selected from WorldSkills’ member countries to demonstrate their technical abilities both individually and collectively.

Curtis Baker will represent the UK at the WorldSkills decorating competition in Brazil

WorldSkills UK selection

Curtis was one of three decorators considered for WorldSkills after being spotted at the Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator of the Year competition.

The Apprentice Decorator of the Year competition has been running for 36 years, taking place every year at the Skills Show at the Birmingham NEC.

It provides an opportunity for participants to showcase their skills on an international stage, as the best performers are likely to be ‘long-listed’ for selection for the WorldSkills UK Squad.

The three decorators were invited to attend intensive training sessions together up until May, after which the 20-year-old was judged the winning candidate at the final team selection session.

Apprentice Decorator of the Year

As Curtis prepares for the 43rd WorldSkills competition, which will take place between 11-16 August at Anhembi Parque, the next round of hopefuls are beginning preparations to compete in the next Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator of the Year contest.

The Crown Trade Apprentice Decorator of the Year competition has been designed to encourage apprentices and trainees to strive for excellence in their craft and reach professional standards.

It offers opportunities at a national and international level.
