After the Second World War, a series of homes were built to solve the shortage of housing in the Bristol Suburb.
Merlin Housing Society owns around 1,500 of these non-traditional homes.
As time has passed, many of the houses in question have developed structural problems.
Expensive to heat, they are poorly insulated and thermally inefficient.
Wetherby Building Systems has recently helped to improve the energy efficiency of 66 of these homes in Bristol’s Cadbury Heath.
To do so, the company provided its EpsiTherm external wall insulation to make the houses warmer and more comfortable for tenants.
Once applied, the system was coated with a mix of silicone, dry dash, brick effect render and Wetherby’s EpsiCoat Mineral Render PLUS.
This was done to ensure that the refurbishment works did not disrupt the appearance of the neighbouring private houses.
Each street cluster was given a different selected finish to ensure its aesthetic remained in keeping with its existing surroundings.
Following the refurbishment, the houses’ inhabitants are able to save around £500 per year on their energy bills.
The upgraded homes are now considered to be ‘thermally efficient’; their U-values are now in keeping with the current building regulations, having reduced from 2.1 W/m2K to 0.30 W/m2K.
In addition to this, the improvements have extended the lives of the homes by 30 years.
