Restoration of the church on a remote isle of Berneray in the Outer Hebrides
The Church stands on a remote isle of Berneray in the Outer Hebrides.
Keith and Sheenagh McIntyre bought the listed property when it just was a roofless shell of a building. They turned the ruin into an artist’s studio where their art students and musician friends could be inspired by the amazing light and beautiful landscape.
Architects: Patience and Highmore
The church was originally built by Sir Thomas Telford
Derek Patience commented: We chose the Kingspan products as not only did we know they would help deliver the thermal performance required on the project, but Kingspan’s Technical advisors were also able to assist us greatly with the specific materials needed based on our design approach.
Insulation of stone walls of the Grade B listed building included two layers of 60 mm thick Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing Boards combined with 30 mm layer of Kingspan Kooltherm K18 Insulated Plasterboard, to meet a target minimum U-value of 0.15 W/m2K,
Second hand scotch slates on a Tyvec membrane were used with two layers of 100 mm thick premium performance Kingspan Kooltherm K7 Pitched Roof Board to meet a target minimum U-value of 0.13 W/m2K.
Why Kingspan Kooltherm products?
They are the most thermally efficient insulation products commonly used today offering a thermal conductivity as low as 0.020 W/m.K.
During the restoration, Keith and Sheenagh faced a number of challenges, including extreme weather conditions and completing the build 400 miles away from their home in Newcastle. However, the completed project has proved to be a haven of warmth and peace.
The building was also awarded a prestigious RIAS Award for Architecture in 2013
