The students were awarded a £1,000 prize for their contribution to the Recofloor Design Competition.
Their ideas to create a roof tile from waste vinyl flooring, along with a modular compost bin, impressed the judges of the competition, which was organised by Recofloor.
The students received their cheque at the Leicester Tigers Rugby Club from former British Lions captain, Bill Beaumont, who has previously hosted at the annual Recofloor Awards event.
They were accompanied by their project coordinators, who will work with Recofloor’s founders to complete research to develop the project further.
The team are currently investigating the feasibility of batch production of the composite bin to be sold on the open market.
Recofloor was founded by Polyflor and Altro in 2009.
Developed to divert waste vinyl flooring from landfill, the scheme has seen over 2,200 tonnes of vinyl flooring waste recycled back into new products.
Making new products from old offcuts can increase the life of vinyl flooring, enabling it to last for over 100 years.
