A total of 474,411 tonnes of waste PVC was recycled through Recovinyl last year, with 16 European countries taking part in the scheme.
160 companies across Europe are currently involved in the Recovinyl scheme
The UK performed highly, contributing to over 20% of the total.
In addition to this, waste PVC-U profiles comprised over half of the UK’s recycling achievement; pipes, rigid and flexible PVC firms and cables made up the rest.
As an operational arm of VinylPlus, the Recovinyl scheme has been developed to tackle the sustainability challenges facing the PVC industry.
By creating a demand for recycled PVC material from the converting industry, the scheme aims to increase the amount of PVC waste being recycled throughout Europe.
Recycled material can be re-used to create new construction products, such as windows, flooring and electricals.
Potential new recycling opportunities for PVC include non-infectious medical PVC waste from hospitals, such as IV Fluid and oxygen bags.
VinylPlus is currently funding RecoMed, a research project designed to collect and recycle PVC from non-pharmacologically active waste from hospitals.
The VinylPlus Voluntary Commitment aims to recycle 800,000 tonnes of PVC waste per year by 2020.
In addition to this, it hopes to recycle 100,000 tonnes of difficult-to-recycle PVC via innovative recycling technologies in the same time span.
