Decothane Ultra was specified after it was discovered that the original rock asphalt roof and balcony of the NHS Trust HQ was in poor condition and desperate need of repair.
An initial survey by Sika Liquid Plastics assessed the condition of the failing roof, which was allowing water ingress and damaging the building below.
It was determined that a non-disruptive waterproofing product was required that would cause minimal interference with the offices, located next to Scarborough Hospital.
Furthermore, it was essential that the product chosen would enable fast installation without the risks associated with hot works.
In order to fulfil these requirements, Decothane Ultra, a cold-applied liquid membrane, was specified for the refurbishment.
Decothane Ultra uses patented, low odour technology developed specifically for use in highly sensitive areas such as hospitals, food manufacturing plants and schools.
The BBA-certified product has been independently benchmarked against other single-pack polyurethanes by Odournet, who found Decothane Ultra to be much lower in odour.
The roof included parapet detailing, plant and a plant room.
Group Tegula was able to install the membrane over the top of the existing roof covering, due to the cold liquid application and unique formulation of Decothane Ultra, which allowed the use of Glass Fibre Matting around plant details.
A Sika Liquid Plastics Versirail was also installed to ensure any subsequent inspection or maintenance on the roof could be conducted safely by staff or contractors.
Alongside the roof refurbishment the communal balcony area also needed to be waterproofed. As it would be used daily by staff it was important that it looked aesthetically pleasing.
As Decothane Ultra is liquid applied, it allowed for a seamless and attractive finish, which was well received by the client and the staff.
Group Tegula also installed a bespoke handrail around the edge of the balcony.
Sika Liquid Plastics provided application support throughout the project, and provided the project with a 20 year guarantee.
