Flat roofing system installed at King’s Cross Station

  • 27 Feb 2015

The old roof at King’s Cross Station’s Southern Colonnade entrance was replaced a GRP flat roofing system from Scott Bader

The station’s previous bitumen bonded felt roofs were sagging and beginning to leak, causing problems for the many people using the busy train station on a daily basis.

They were deemed damaged beyond repair.

Network Rail initiated a refurbishment project and specified Scott Bader’s CrysticROOF BBA Premier, a GRP flat roofing system, to replace the old roofs.

CrysticROOF flat roofing system

Scott Bader’s CrysticROOF range of fibreglass roofing products are cold-applied. They have been developed for flat and pitched roof designs.

The flat roofing system, which has been BBA approved, includes a fire-resistant isophthalic topcoat to ensure that installers and contractors meet fire safety legislation when they are fitting the system.

When fitted correctly, the system provides UV-resistance and offers protection against weathering.

The CrysticROOF GRP flat roofing system complies with BS476 Part 3 for all roof structures, including flat and pitched roofs as well as roof-lights, balconies and walkways

It has been designed to remain watertight and maintenance-free for a number of years; when installed by a trained and approved CrysticROOF installer, the materials are also guaranteed for 25 years.

The unsaturated polyester resin and topcoat GRP raw materials that are used in the manufacture of the CrysticROOF system are manufactured at Scott Bader’s UK plant, which is based in Northamptonshire.

Samples of the materials were submitted to Network Rail before the system was specified to ensure the company was happy with the product.

Before approving the CrysticROOF system for the project, Network Rail tested the materials with a series of in-house technical examinations.

The CrysticROOF Premier system has been accredited to BS476 Part 3 for all roof structures and shapes.

The system has been approved as a GRP roof waterproofing system to NHBC Standards 2011.
