Triple glazed windows replace timber units in cottage renovation

  • 20 Apr 2015

The homeowner of the Gloucestershire cottage has saved energy since installing REHAU’s Nordic Design Plus window system

Designed for both the new build and timber replacement sectors, REHAU’s Nordic Design Plus window system is externally flush-fitting with outward opening.

Whilst being specified for modern projects such as Crest Nicholson’s Centenary Quay development in Southampton, the system has also been used as a replacement for timber in many cottages and stone built properties.

Improving thermal efficiency

It was recently selected by a Gloucestershire homeowner, who was adding a brick faced slip system to the exterior of his poorly insulated cottage.

The REHAU Nordic Design Plus window system has been developed to improve the thermal efficiency of buildings

The homeowner wanted to replace the cottage’s original single glazed timber windows with REHAU’s Nordic Design Plus system.

Designed to be thermally efficient and low maintenance, the system has a frame of 120mm in depth and a 67mm flush fitting sash.

The units are manufactured with REHAU’s RAU-FIPRO fibre composite material, despite possessing the appearance of a solid timber window.

They also incorporate a co-extruded PVC outer layer, which adds to their stiffness, strength and thermal properties.

After installation

A total of seven triple glazed windows have been installed in the cottage, each with U-values lower than 1.0 W/m2K.

Since renovating his cottage, the homeowner has reported energy savings of around 12%.
