Government review into Green Deal welcomed by GGF

Growing energy efficiency market

The Energy Secretary Ed Davey

Speaking recently at Ecobuild Exhibition in London, Energy Secretary Ed Davey said that there are now over 100,000 jobs in the UK’s multi-billion pound energy efficiency market

  • average household energy consumption has reduced by 20% since the first Ecobuild exhibition
  • comprehensive framework for energy efficiency now in place
  • over 1 million homes have been made warmer, greener and cheaper to heat through the Green Deal and ECO
  • energy efficiency is one of the main tools for reducing the burden of energy prices on all consumers

Mr Davey said: “While we’ve had just shy of half a million Green Deal assessments, with the majority resulting in people investing in home energy efficiency, the Green Deal Finance package itself hasn’t proved attractive.”

The Government’s chief construction advisor had been commissioned to look at better ways of triggering “innovation and deployment” to encourage a greater uptake in energy efficiency measures, specifically solid wall insulation.

Green Deal has failed to deliver on targets

Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive

Nigel Rees, Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) Group Chief Executive:

“It has taken a while but the Government now appear to finally accept that their flagship initiative Green Deal has failed to deliver the results that DECC set over two years ago when the scheme was launched. We welcome Mr Davey’s comments about reviewing the entire scheme – something the GGF has called for over the last 18 months when the statistics were showing a poor uptake by homeowners. The GGF will be contacting The Green Deal Construction Board to offer to contribute to the Green Deal Review.”
