Election wish-list: what the glazing industry expects from our new Government

  • 6 May 2015

In its survey, Pilkington UK asked its customers to identify the issues that they would like the UK’s new Government to prioritise.

An emphasis was placed on new housing and planning laws; an investment in skills was also high on the agenda.

After talks with businesses from across the supply chain, Pilkington’s Andy McDowell, predicts a return to growth for the industry

Expectations and priorities

20% of the 318 respondents named a long-term plan for the construction of new homes as the top priority.

15% called for a relaxation in the planning laws for minor alterations to properties.

A total of 14% recognised the importance of sustainability, asking the new Government to improve the energy efficiency of the UK’s existing housing stock by incentivising home owners and landlords.

Meanwhile, 13% called for support for education and training schemes to equip the industry with necessary skills and qualifications.

Other priorities named were commercial construction projects and large-scale infrastructure investment.

Helping the industry to grow

With confidence beginning to return to spending in many areas of the glazing industry, it is important that the new Government helps to nurture these trends.

As Pilkington’s survey has identified, the industry believes that upgrading the UK’s housing stock, building new homes and investing in education will ensure that it continues to progress.
