Shane York and Tom Wragg were declared the winners of the CIATs Student Award for Excellence in Architectural Technology 2014
The winning project was designed by Shane York ACIAT from Sheffield Hallam University. His building, Millhouses Works, was commended by the judges for being both sustainable and attractive with thorough detailing and quality construction.
Shanes building was designed to provide artisan food to the local community.
The winning report also came from Sheffield Hallam University. Written by Tom Wragg ACIAT, it examines the properties of modified wood for use in external cladding.
The judges awarded Tom first place for his methodically researched and comprehensively written report.
Many other students were commended for their efforts. In the project section, the judges particularly liked Kirkstall Forge Primary School, which was designed by Leeds Metropolitan Universitys Gihan Badi ACIAT. The sustainable design combined both modern and traditional architectural styles.
Jacob Handford ACIAT from the University of Plymouth was also praised for his design of a vocational college on the site of a closed paper mill. He was commended again for his report on the significance of thermal comfort in a Passivhaus school.
Magdalena Blazusiak ACIAT from The Robert Gordon University gained recognition for her report on preserving built environments through building refurbishment in the residential sector.
Daniel Owen from Anglia Ruskin University was commended for his comparative study into the cost of Passivhaus in the United Kingdom.
