Lift installed at rail hub to improve vertical access for passengers

The Stannah Major Projects team worked in partnership with Network Rail and main contractor, Taylor Woodrow, to install the lifts at the Edwardian, Grade II listed city centre station at a cost of around £18.5 million.

The refurbishment involved the stations exterior and platform buildings being cleaned and refurbished, with glass panels being fixed to the canopies to improve lighting and a new southern concourse being constructed to serve the new tram stop.

An existing porch was also converted for passengers, with new glazing, flooring and cafes being incorporated, whilst a new ticket office was introduced to cope with demand.

The overall project includes platform building, track re-laying, signal replacement, junction remodelling, changing track layouts, replacing level crossings with footbridges, renewing equipment and moving the control of signalling to a centre situated in Derby.

Passenger lifts installed on platforms

The lift work carried out by Stannah includes:
• Removing the existing passenger lift on Platform 7 and replacing it with a 3000kg, 40 person, single-entry, 2-stop passenger lift.
• Installing a 630kg, 8-person, through-car, 4-stop passenger lift at the newly refurbished British Transport Police Block.
• To serve the new concourse, new street-level taxi rank and the Nottingham Express Transit tram stop, a 1200kg, 16-person, through car, 2-stop passenger lift within a half glazed shaft.
• Two 2000kg, 26-person, through car, 2-stop goods/passenger lifts were installed in the new retail area to allow for the transportation of stock from the delivery facility to the shops and food outlets.

Designed and installed by Stannah’s Major Projects team, all the lifts are hydraulically driven, have separate motor rooms and meet the Network Rail vandal resistant/Equality Act 2010 specification.

The team provide project planning and management, estimating, technical operations, logistics, product design and engineering, field management, health and safety and quality control.
