Aico’s CO alarms have been installed inside Newington Housing Association’s latest social housing development, which is based in Northern Belfast.
The Limestone Road regeneration project is a scheme to transform a volatile interface area of Belfast; it is currently in its Parkside Phase, which features 36 new build and re-habilitated houses.
This social housing development aims to provide flexibly designed homes to residents with ever-changing requirements.
Smoke and heat alarms from Aico’s Ei160RC Series were specified for the development’s Parkside Phase. The mains powered Ei261ENRC CO alarms – which feature rechargeable battery back-up – succeeded in meeting Newington Housing Association’s strict requirements and standards.
The series has been specifically developed for social housing providers, offering protection for BS 5839-6 Grade D applications.
Five Aico alarms have been fitted inside each property; they are hard wired together to offer optimum protection and easy control via a single wall mounted switch.
The control switch allows residents to test all their alarms from one point, safely. The hard wiring ensures that all of the property’s alarms sound when one is triggered, ensuring that the alarm is heard throughout.
Three optical smoke alarms are located in the main habitable areas and escape routes, with one heat alarm in each property’s kitchen. The CO alarm has been installed adjacent to the boiler in each house.
The alarms incorporate rechargeable Lithium cells to provide over six month’s back-up in the event of a mains failure. In addition, they come with LED indicators for early detection of CO, a Test/Silence button and Easi-fit design for easy installation.
A Memory feature has been included to enable the user to tell if CO has been detected during a period of absence.

Great news that Newington have fitted CO alarms but this week Trading Standards have found that 80% of various CO alarms tested were not working properly.
Previous reports have found that up to 45% were not working properly, 16 % out of the box.
The law for landlords changes on October 1st requiring the installation of WORKING CO and smoke alarms.
An increasing number of authorities will be testing with Detectagas to sensor inclusively test CO alarms. The so called “Test Button” does not fully test a CO alarm only the battery, buzzer and circuit; not the sensor which has a limited and indeterminable life.
Landlords face a fine of £5K if their alarm is found not to be working and the Councils have been told to pay for the work by self financing i.e. fines.
CO alarms can save lives but only when they are sensing gas, sensing gas = working sensor = sensor inclusive test.
