VPS Site Security has developed an integrated protection and monitoring solution for a £150 million Costain construction site, which is based along 14 kilometres of Welsh highway.
The ‘Heads of Valleys’ road, which follows the southern boundary of South Wales’ Brecon Beacons National Park , is undergoing a vast improvement scheme.
Dealing with a 400 metre ascent, with limited radio communications and heavy traffic, the scheme presents an environmental and engineering challenge.
As a UK security solutions provider for large and remote sites, VPS Site Security has developed an integrated protection and monitoring solution for Costain
By using a combination of its mobile CCTV product – the JCB Smart Tower – and human guarding services, the company aims to monitor the traffic flow over the length of the highway, whilst simultaneously protecting construction storage sites.
CCTV towers, which are monitored remotely, can be safer and more cost-effective than employing guards to patrol the roads.
For instance, the Towers work to alert the services when motorists break down along the route and need, whilst keeping the compounds and plant secure from vandalism and theft.
Deploying a connectivity network with wireless fluid-mesh communications, 18 JCB Smart Towers have been erected; they are supported by VPS mobile patrols, which compliment the security and monitoring service.
The design plan has benefited security and the construction operation, with the materials and compounds protected, and early traffic flow alerts to help meet Costain project schedules and social capital goals.

Contractors will be able to meet VPS Site Security specialists at the Build Show this week, on stand B3/616.
