A deaf swim coach is campaigning for the inclusion of Geofire’s Agrippa Pillow Alarms in hotel rooms, to ensure that deaf people are alerted if a fire alarm sounds during their stay.
As a sufferer of progressive hearing loss, Louise Halvey often finds that hotels do not offer adequate fire safety provisions for deaf people.
Louise, who is a swim coach for deaf children, claims that she is very aware of the fact that she must rely on a strange member of staff to enter her room and wake her, should a fire alarm sound when she is staying in a hotel.
Geofire’s Agrippa Pillow Alarm offers a solution.
The system makes use of the company’s ‘listen and learn’ technology to alert deaf people and those who are hard of hearing if a fire alarm sounds when they are sleeping.
Battery powered and wire-free, the unit has a pad attachment, which has been designed to fit comfortably under a sleeper’s pillow.
If a fire alarm sounds, the pillow pad vibrates; LED lights flash on the Agrippa Pillow Alarm, and its LCD screen displays the word ‘FIRE’.
The portable unit requires no installation, meaning that it can be moved around a building as required.
Louise, who is supporting the campaign to alert hoteliers of the need for proper sleeping provisions, has described the Agrippa Pillow Alarm as “the perfect solution” for deaf guests.
As part of Geofire’s Agrippa Acoustics products range, the pillow alarm offers compliance with certain elements of the 2010 Equality Act. It has been praised for protecting the rights of deaf and hard hearing people.
