The Kingspan OPTIM-R Balcony & Terrace System has been installed as part of a new sheltered housing development in Salford.
Amblecote Gardens is comprised of 66 apartments, designed to allow elderly and vulnerable people to live independently whilst still receiving care.
The complex – owned by the City West Housing Trust – was designed by DK-Architects, who specified the Kingspan OPTIM-R Balcony & Terrace System in order to allow easy access to three outdoor roof balconies whilst insulating the apartments below.
The Kingspan OPTIM-R Balcony & Terrace System was able to achieve a compliant U-value of 0.19 W/m2k on the balcony areas, with a total insulation build-up of just 85mm.
This was to ensure there was an even transition between the internal and external spaces, meeting the requirements of the Lifetime Homes Standard in addition to Approved Document M.
Due to the panel’s sealed microporous vacuum, the system was able to achieve a aged thermal conductivity of just 0.007 W/m2K.
Two layers of Kingspan OPTIM-R was laid onto the balcony measuring at 30mm thick, along with Kingspan OPTIM-R flex infill strips.
The OPTIM-R flex infil strips can be cut to fit into awkward scrapes or to allow penetrations through the system.
An additional 25mm layer of Kingspan Thermaroof TR27 LPC/FM was then placed over to receive the single-ply waterproof membrane.
All Kingspan OPTIM-R Systems are certified by LABC Registered Details. Panels measuring between 20-40mm are also certified by BDA Agrément when installed to Kingspan Insulation’s recommendations. This helps to streamline Building Control processes, in turn reducing construction time and costs.
The company’s technical team also provide detailed layouts for every product, helping to simplify installations and insure the systems thickness is kept to a minimum.
