Selectaglaze’s secondary glazing has been used to restore a former Georgian family home, which now serves Colchester as a luxury hotel, to its former grandeur.
Constructed on the site of a Franciscan monastery, GreyFriars was built in the late 18th century. With its Georgian façade and formal gardens, the building originally served as a family home; it has since been used as a convent by the Ladies of Nazareth, a school and an adult college.
Presently, GreyFriars accommodates a luxury hotel and restaurant. When its owners, OMC Investments, acquired planning permission to transform the Grade II Listed building, it issued a refurbishment to repair its period features and restore it to its former grandeur.
Selectaglaze was contracted to advise on the treatment of the original windows, which were causing draughts, heat loss and admitting the ingress and egress of noise.
The company’s secondary glazing, which is widely accepted by heritage agencies for use on Listed buildings, such as GreyFriars, was fitted to the room side of the building’s existing primary windows.
Over one hundred units were installed, using nine different systems.
The units were tailored to meet the specific needs of the project; some of the windows, for instance, required careful treatment to ensure that the original stained glass could be accessed for cleaning and maintenance purposes.
Although the majority of the windows were fitted with 6mm toughened glass, 10.8 Stadip Silence was used for noise containment in one particular area.
Selectaglaze’s products are able to attain sound reductions to 45dB when fitted with an air gap of 100mm, meaning that people outside GreyFriars will not be disturbed by the people within.
To eliminate draughts and reduce heat loss, seals have been used to trap an insulating layer.
