Waterproofing the Houses of Paliament

Waterproofing solutions specified at Houses of Parliament

  • 9 Nov 2015

Newton Waterproofing Systems has recently designed and installed an array of waterproofing solutions at the Houses of Parliament.

The London landmark has dominated the city’s skyline for the past 150 years and has been present in its current location in some form since the 11th century.

The construction project to create the iconic building originally began back in 1840. As part of the project, the original John Newton, founder of Newton Waterproofing Systems, provided materials to help create the building’s ceilings.

Over a century later, Newton supplied the Newtonite ventilated damp proofing membrane to lower ground floor rooms, which were suffering from water ingress from the adjacent River Thames.

This was replaced in the 1980’s by the Newton 805 Newlath membrane, which was installed in several other lower ground floor rooms as remedial protection against damp.

Waterproofing solutions

With a long-standing relationship already in place, Newton recently returned to the Houses of Parliament for a detailed analysis of the plans and drawings by MacLennanUK, in order to specify a waterproofing solution for the new-build basement.

The project required the design and installation of an external waterproofing membrane, an internal cavity drain system and a polyurea roofing membrane, to ensure a high stand of waterproofing.

Externally, Newton’s self-healing 403 HydroBond membrane was applied extensively to ensure a waterproof seal around the basement structure.

Internally, Newton 508 and Newton 520 membranes were applied from floor to ceiling as part of a complete System 500 cavity drainage solution.

A polyurea coating was applied once the finished structure was in place, in addition to further drainage membrane to the roof deck of the basement.

Reliable protection

The waterproof structure is fully compliant with the requirements of BS 8102:2009 to provide a durable and well-established waterproofing solution.

After utilising the Newton Systems, MaclennanUK also provided an insured-backed guarantee for the work undertaken, confident in the level of protection against water ingress.
