DORMA has supplied a comprehensive package of sustainable doors to the recently renovated Bishop Centre shopping complex in Buckinghamshire.
The Bishop Centre – located between Maidenhead and Slough – has recently undergone a complete transformation, as its ageing retail units were completely demolished and replaced with 101,500 square feet of contemporary commercial space.
Designed by 3D Reid Architects and developer Land Securities, the Bishop Centre features a high-end structural glazing system which forms a key part of the external building envelope.
In-keeping with the sustainable ethos of the project, a series of large, welcoming entrances that provide excellent thermal performance were specified.
As such, DORMA was contacted to supply a range of doors that would match the quality and aesthetics of the rest of the building.
The door package included DORMA’s ST FLEX Green energy saving automatic sliding doors, which were installed by architectural glazing contractor Vitrine Systems. The package complemented the Centre’s extensive Pilkington Planar glazed frontage to create a large, contemporary façade.
Tony Williams of Vitrine Systems commented: “Large, thermally broken automatic sliding doors would provide more light and a greater feeling of space whilst enhancing the cutting edge aesthetic.
Utilising steel goalposts to support their size, the sleek design of the DORMA ST FLEX Green proved a perfect match to the all-glass facade.”
Designed to resemble the company’s standard ST FLEX systems, the DORMA ST FLEX Green automatic sliding doors combine a slender profile and fine frame with high performance thermal insulation. The doors achieve a low U-value of 1.4-1.8W/m2K to reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions.
In addition, the automatic sliding doors meet the thermal requirements of Approved Document L.
The Tesco store, located in unit 1 of the complex, used the DORMA ST Flex Green automatic sliding door to complete the building envelope.
The large glass entrance lobby, used for additional retail space, features two entrance options that use DORMA frameless glass automatic sliding doors to maintain the light and airy feel.
DORMA’s ED250A automatic swing doors were specified for the entrances to the coffee shop and wine warehouse, to deliver easy and reliable access to units 10 and 11.
Door packages for retail spaces are required to create an aesthetically pleasing frontage, welcoming customers and providing a durable solution that can withstand the constant flow of traffic.
DORMA’s sustainable door solutions provided an ideal solution for the new Bishop Centre in Buckinghamshire, meeting the projects aesthetic, performance and environmental needs.
