Two of London’s most iconic visitor attractions have benefitted from a planned roof maintenance programme, with specialist contractor Delomac Roofing specifying Sika Sarnafil membranes for the project.
The programme of roof replacement and thermal upgrading has seen in excess of 12,000 square metres of Sika Sarnafil membranes installed at the London Science and History Museums.
Insulation, roof lights and walkways were also installed over a series of 30 projects, including the complete Sainsbury Wing in 2008.
Specifications were delivered using the Sika Sarnafil Partner Supply Chain, ensuring watertight and long lasting protection to museum displays.
At the Science Museum, the ageing and poorly insulated roof coverings were replaced and upgraded. Both Delomac and Sika Sarnafil received awards for the project.
Brendan McNulty said: “With the impact of rising utility costs, effective thermal upgrades were completed with the roof works, delivering tangible cost savings.”
The Science Museum houses many historic planes in its Flight Gallery, including a Spitfire, which visitors were able to safely enjoy without disruption whilst the roof works were completed.
This is due to the lightweight membranes and considered planned specifications, which allowed system overlays with an entirely flame-free cold application to ensure minimal internal disturbance.
Both environmental and whole life cost considerations were of utmost importance at the sites in material specification – with a target to reduce energy use.
Brendan added: “As with all London sites – particularly with huge public visitor numbers, logistical issues were challenging; but the advantage of a unified supply chain with out of hours early deliveries ensured zero risk to arriving footfall.
The roof refurbishments on both buildings have been designed to an exceptionally high standard. Our effective installation, backed by Sika Sarnafil’s robust guarantees ensure the client has peace of mind for years to come.”
