In conjunction with Philips, Axion Consulting is working on a research project, which illustrates the benefits of circular economy business models for refurbished medical imaging and ultrasound equipment in Britain’s hospitals.

Circular economy business models for hospitalsLaunched in September 2015, the six-month project will explore how the proposed circular economy business models for supplying refurbished equipment can work within the UK healthcare sector.

Co-funded by Innovate UK, the study focuses on a range of medical imaging equipment, including ultrasound equipment, MRI scanners, interventional X-ray equipment, mobile surgery and CT scanners.

Significant amounts of critical raw materials, such as Gallium in LCD screens and integrated circuits, Beryllium in CT scanners and Niobium superconducting magnets and Helium for MRI scanners, will also be preserved.

Circular economy business models for a sustainable future

Circular economy business models for hospitalsIt has been described as an ‘ambitious’ project, which is expected have a ‘significant impact’ on the UK’s healthcare sector. Axion hopes it will allow for a sustainable future, whilst simultaneously increasing the affordability of vital diagnostic hospital equipment.

Comparable to car leasing concepts, the project will incorporate the provision of fully-managed equipment services, pay-per-use and incentivised return and reuse.

The NHS and private sector health professionals are inviting feedback via a short survey as part of the study.

The survey has been designed to gain an understanding of what conditions need to be met for the healthcare sector to adopt alternative business models for high-quality refurbished medical imaging devices.
