Government plan building on green belt land

  • 9 Dec 2015

Howard Chapman, Buildingtalk Editor, invites comments on Government plans to build on green belt land.

The Government wants to allow some ‘Starter Homes’ to be constructed on green belt land on the the outskirts of cities.

Government plan building on green belt landThe ‘National Planning Policy – consultation on proposed changes’ is seeking views on specific changes to national planning policy to support delivery of new homes, including low cost homes for first time buyers.

The Independent reported yesterday that the Government plans to relax laws against building on green belt land on the outskirts of cities. Under the new proposals, rules will be changed to allow councils “to allocate appropriate small-scale sites in the Green Belt specifically for starter homes”.

This is despite a survey in the summer that showed two-thirds of public against building on Britain’s green belt.

But the need for more land to build homes is self evident. There is growing pressure from housing developers – not least because of the potential profits are enormous.

What do you think?

  • Hi Howard – yet again the government is proposing poorly thought through ” solutions ” to the housing problem. It is the planning system and those that apply it that have created this crisis. We certainly need to release much more land for housing and the planning system needs to be forced into changing in this direction. Some greenfield land will no doubt be needed for housing – BUT – Starter homes ?. Surely larger family homes for those more established would be far more appropriate for locations on the edge of cities. Starter homes, surely, need to be located within city areas where all the infrastructure is close-by. This would release property in the cities for many of those first time byers ?.
